Home Learning Tasks

Week fourteen (Monday 13th July) Tasks

Hello Year 3,
Our time in  year 3 together is very quickly running out!  It has been really lovely seeing those of you able to come back to school.  I hope you all had a great time in your bubble and I look forward to seeing you for our final week together!  If you are unable to return - don't worry - you are not forgotten! I will be saving my air hugs for you and passing them onto you the next time I see you!
Online learning will continue for all of you - so keep logging into Mathletics, Purple Mash and Google Classroom.  Don't forget that if you are doing tasks in your Home Learning Book then please keep sending me photos of your brilliant work.

Congratulations to Gabriel who received the Home Learning Award last week.

Looking forward to catching up with you! Love Mrs Thomas xx

By the end of this week, you should aim to:
1. Achieve 1000 points and complete the activities set on Mathletics - adding and subtracting, problem solving and reasoning.

2. Take part in a Joe Wick's (The body coach) P.E. session or Cosmic Kids Yoga.  You could even enjoy some sporting activities in your garden as the weather is going to be sunny!

3. Complete a RWI activity from the link on the bottom of our class web page and enjoy reading for 15 minutes every day.  You could even write a short book review based on your reading.

4. Now you know how to describe the weather and what clothes you are wearing, I want you to join your sentences together using 'achos' - (because) e.g. Dw i'n gwisgo siwmper du achos mae hi'n oer. (I am wearing a black jumper because it  is cold).  Dw i'n gwisgo siorts glas achos mae hi'n boeth. (I am wearing blue shorts because it is hot).
If you want to be extra clever you could include 2 items of clothing using a (and) e.g. Dw i'n gwisgo sgert coch a het oren achos mae hi'n cymylog.  (I wear a red skirt and orange hat because it is cloudy).

Use Google Slides to create your sentences and pictures.  This video clip will remind you of sentence patterns.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9pfjty/articles/zsqs8mn.

5.  I want you to create a thank you card for someone who has helped you during the lockdown.(This might be Mam, Dad, Nan, Grampa etc).
You can create your own card out of paper, decorate it to make it look really special, photograph it and email it to me please.
In your thank you message, you will need to;
*explain why you are thanking them
*describe how they helped you
*describe how you feel about them.

6.  Have some fun by completing the science at home activity - science with ice.  You don't need to record anything formally, although you might want to send me a short video explaining your findings. Photographs would be great too!  There are two different activities you can choose from - you can do both if you want to be a super scientist!

Activity 1 - Ice Rescue - Place a small plastic toy or figure (Lego works well) into the container and fill to almost the top with water. Leave in a freezer until the water is frozen. Remove the container and leave for 5-10 minutes until the ice loosens and then tip it out onto a plate or tray.
Explore and discuss
What happens when you pour a little bit of warm water onto the ice? What happens if you put salt onto the ice? What do you think would be the fastest way to rescue your toy from the ice? What could you do to find out? Are bigger toys easier to rescue from the ice than smaller toys?

Activity 2 - Melting ice - Freeze several small ice cubes or shapes of the same size. Put them in separate containers and choose different places to leave them. If you can go outside, you could
put one in the shade, one in the sunshine and also leave one inside. You could also try making ice cubes out of different liquids like milk, vinegar or cooking oil.
Explore and discuss
Where does the ice cube melt the most quickly? Why might that be? Can you find the place where the ice cube will take the longest time to melt? Or the shortest time to melt? What happens with frozen cubes made from different liquids?

7. Take time to read Chapter 5 of Alien Hotel found on Purple Mash. If you get stuck on a word - use your strategies, e.g. RWInc to help! Answer the quiz questions set based on Chapter 4 once you have read the chapter.

8.  After reading Chapter 5 and that you've seen how alien life is different to Earth. I would like you to write a postcard to you parents. Write about your journey to the planet, the aliens you have met, and the fantastic sights you've seen.

9. I would like you to write a letter to your future self that will be opened in the year 2030 from you in the present. Think about everything that has happened to you so far in your lovely short lives.  You might want to concentrate on your adventures during lockdown, your favourite memories of year 3 and how you have enjoyed spending time with your friends and family.  Try to include some humour, lots of details and true facts.  I can't wait to read them.

I have attached a power point to remind of how to lay out your informal letter.

10 Read the power point on Taking Action - Respecting Our World as a Holy Place.   We are a Rights Respecting School who campaign for children's rights, e.g. right to an education, healthy life, religion etc.
Write an acrostic poem using the letters of the words R E S P E C T at the start of each new line, linking this to how we look after God’s world. You can write the poems on cut-out leaves or recycled paper etc and attach all the words of your poem and display outdoors.  You can send me a photo of your beautiful poem.
*If you need a reminder on what an acrostic poem is - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/ztdvw6f

12. You have spent all these months being a 'Hero' at home by completing practical tasks.  I want you to write about why you are a 'Hero' using Google Docs.  Explain to me what you have been doing, who you have been helping and why you have been doing these things.  I know I will be very impressed with your heroics.

Tasks taken from your Home - School book. You can do these anytime.
