On Tuesday 28th June, 12 members of our school Chess team competed in the Merthyr Primary Schools Chess Championship. These children have been working hard over the past term to prepare for this tournament, playing chess games in after schools club and practising with chess puzzles.
After 5 rounds, our team emerged victorious in 2nd place with a grand total of 116 points, a mere 4 points behind the winning team! All the team played brilliantly, and showed amazing sportsmanship and behaviour throughout the day.
Trophies were given to Anshul Swamy (Y3), who won all 5 of his matches, and Finn Miller (Y4) who was undefeated and scored an amazing 14 points out of a possible 15.
Here are some photos of our day and the winning team and their trophies!
Chess Club takes place on Monday after school from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. It is run by Mrs. Kett and supervised by Mr Stickler. Chess Club is open for all pupils from Year 2 to Year 6.

Cardiff City Chess Tournament 2014
The Chess Club of St. Mary's Primary School enjoyed a fabulous time on Tuesday 25th November 2014 at Cardiff City Stadium. Their support of each other, the high fives and hugs of support were amazing, as well as their behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the day. Although our team did not win the tournament, everyone in the team scored at least one point, and all of them agreed they had learnt some new skills in their first ever tournament!
The team would like to thank the hosts and judges of the chess tournament, especially Helen Hughes and Sarah Kett of Stephens and George, for hosting a fantastic day out. We look forward to the next tournament and are aiming to improve on our score.
